Develop Daily Discipline and Reach Your Goals
The ability to control yourself might be the most important skill you can possess. You probably already know how to get in great shape, eat properly, find a better-paying job, and succeed in a lot of other ways. The problem is, you’re not doing those things.
What you lack is enough discipline. Discipline allows you to use what you know. Without it, you’re just a dusty library of information.
Develop the discipline necessary to excel in life with these strategies:
- Rest is important. Fatigue is a killer of discipline. Have you ever noticed that your discipline is weakest at night? That’s when you’re more likely to waste time. You’re more likely to eat poorly. You’re more likely to send an ill-advised text message to your ex. If you have a task to complete that requires discipline, schedule it when your energy is at its peak.
- Get enough sleep each night to be at your best. Plan naps if the afternoon if possible.
- Exercise isn’t just good for you, it’s good for the development of discipline. Exercising regularly is challenging both physically and mentally. It’s not easy to get yourself to exercise every day. The slight physical discomfort also requires discipline to endure. You also have the benefit of enhancing your health at the same time.
- Get organized. Getting and staying organized is another gentle way to build your discipline. Start with just one part of your home. Declutter and clean. Then move on to another part of the house. Clutter also saps your discipline and willpower.
- If you’re naturally messy, getting organized might be more challenging than you think. Take small steps and avoid losing ground. It doesn’t do much good if you clean a room, and it returns to a messy state in a few days. Stay on top of it!
- Learn persistence. It’s questionable if you can have discipline without persistence. Fortunately, there are countless opportunities to practice each day. Become a master at completing tasks.
- Fold all the laundry instead of leaving part of it for later.
- Wash all the dishes instead of leaving that gross, greasy dish until tomorrow.
- Whenever you start to feel a little bored, tired, hungry, or uncomfortable, continue with your current task for at least a few more minutes. You’ve learned how to quit easily. Teach yourself how to persist after you want to stop. Even three minutes is an improvement and a good starting point.
- Meditate daily. From a distance, meditation looks easy. After all, how hard can it be to just sit there and focus on your breathing, right? Try it once and see how hard it can be. Meditation teaches focus and the ability to persevere when you’re emotionally and physically uncomfortable.
- It’s hard not to think, “How much longer?” when you’re in the middle of a meditation session. Start with just a few minutes and add a few more minutes each week. When you can sit for an hour straight, you can do anything.
- Learn to forgive easily. Negative emotions consume a lot of energy and make self-discipline much more challenging. When you’re consumed with negative thoughts, it’s hard to do anything productive. Let go of the negative energy inside of you and you’ll have more self-control.
Self-control is the key to making progress. You already know enough. Sometimes, gathering more information is just an excuse to stall.
Take the knowledge you already have and put it to work. Learn to do things you don’t necessarily feel like doing. The alternative is to live an unfulfilling life.

8 Mistakes Successful People Don’t Make – or Don’t Repeat
Do you keep making the same mistakes? If you do, you might find that you make little progress in your life. There is a huge opportunity to learn from your mistakes. Those that successfully learn from their mistakes wind up being highly successful. Those that repeat them struggle. Imagine how your life would be different if you never made the same mistake twice.
Learn from your mistakes and vow to never repeat them:
- Successful people avoid making excuses. Excuses are preparations for failure. An excuse is a justification to fail or quit. No one will resolve your challenges for you. Take responsibility and do the best you can.
- Fail to have an objective. Life without goals is a random experience. Unfortunately, without a direction, your life will tend to get worse rather than better. Have a goal or expect to be disappointed.
- What are your goals right now? Do you have them written down? What do you think you’ll accomplish over the next six months if you don’t have any goals?
- Create 3-5 goals that you can accomplish over the next six months.
- Fail to have a plan. If you have a goal, you must have a plan for achieving it. One isn’t much good without the other. Avoid hoping and wishing your goals will come true on their own. Take the bull by the horns.
- Successful people don’t repeat their mistakes. Most of us make the same mistakes repeatedly. Whether it’s making a poor choice in a mate, overspending, or trying to gain new customers through ineffective means, people are creatures of habit. Make habits of your effective behaviors, rather than your ineffective behaviors.
- Expect others to change. Is it easy to change your own attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors? And you want to change! Consider how hard it would be to change someone else. And they don’t want to change! You can’t change others.
- Choosing comfort over progress. Perhaps the largest mistake of those who struggle in life is the tendency to place short-term comfort over long-term advantages. This is a very ineffective way to deal with life. This is the friend that asks to sleep on your couch for a few days and is still there after three months.
- Not playing to their strengths. The most successful people take full advantage of their strengths at every opportunity. While it’s admirable to work on your weaknesses, most successful people choose to avoid them. You can’t be good at everything. Use your talents and strengths as much as possible.
- Ignoring the little things. It’s the little things that will derail your efforts. It’s easy to ignore the seemingly mundane details, but those details can make all the difference in the end.
Make use of your mistakes. Learn from them and decide to avoid them in the future. Life is easy if you don’t repeat your errors.
Examine the challenges in your life and ask yourself why they occurred. What could you have done differently to avoid those challenges? It’s worthwhile to spend some time each week reviewing the past week. Determine your mistakes and ensure that you don’t repeat them. Watch how quickly your life changes!

My thoughts are under my control
I choose to be in control of my thoughts. My thoughts lead to my actions.
I can choose my actions by managing my thoughts successfully. Though it can be challenging to control my thoughts at times, I find I am very successful at it.
I have the focus and determination to control myself. I exclude negative thinking and maintain positive thoughts.
I begin my day by making my purpose clear to myself and the world. Once I know what needs to be done, I can focus my thoughts in the right direction.
My thoughts are in line with my values. My values guide my choices and thoughts. I know I am on the right path when my goals, thoughts, and actions are in alignment with my values. Reviewing my values daily keeps them fresh in my mind.
I practice controlling my thoughts throughout the day. I focus on the task at hand and avoid allowing my focus to waver. Through practice, I build my ability to control my thoughts.
Controlling my thoughts is the greatest power I have at my disposal. Controlling my thoughts allows me to control everything else about myself.
Today, I only entertain thoughts that serve me. I have positive thoughts that align with my goals. I feel more powerful than I ever have before.
My thoughts are under my control.
