Overcoming Procrastination: Five Simple Ways to Get Up and Go

Procrastination: it’s something a good number of us tend to do, no matter what the task.

We know that putting something off doesn’t help us and it only makes things worse by adding stress to our lives, but knowing this only makes us procrastinate more.

How can you stop this vicious cycle, use your time more effectively, and get your tasks done sooner?

Here are 5 simple ways to get up and go and stop putting off things that must be done for the sake of bittersweet procrastination:

1. Determine why you delay working on your task.

Is it a specific task that you’re putting off, or do you procrastinate everything on your plate?

What is it about this task that stops you from doing it?

Are you scared of failing?

Do you fear that you’ll fall short of what’s expected of you?

Are you just lazy?

Are you resentful of whoever put this obligation upon you?

By evaluating the task, you can better understand what’s holding you back so you can complete the task more efficiently.

2. Make a plan.

When you make a step-by-step plan, you are setting a specific schedule and timeline to complete the task.

Write this plan down on paper.

Writing this list will help you better organize your thoughts and determine the small steps you need to take to accomplish your goals.

Give yourself attainable tasks on a daily, weekly or hourly timetable, as it applies to your situation.

You are less likely to be overwhelmed when you’re faced with small, manageable steps.

3. Be Realistic.

Be realistic about what you can achieve in your plan.

Doing so makes each step clearly attainable and you’ll be less likely to put it off.

Knowing your limits will make your goals seem easier and less of a mountain to climb.

4. Just Begin.

It sounds simple enough, but few heed this simple tip.

Most procrastinators find themselves prone to delaying the start of the task because it seems too overwhelming.

Instead, they stress and worry during the final moments before it’s due.

No matter how large or insurmountable the task may seem, beginning with even a small action will build momentum.

Simply beginning also tends to put the task into perspective and makes it seem more possible than ever.

5. Take Breaks.

Taking scheduled breaks while working on your task refreshes your body and mind.

If you go for a 10-minute walk or work on a Sudoku puzzle, you’ll feel re-energize and you’ll be in a better frame of mind to forge on.

Breaks, while refreshing, should be taken in moderation; you certainly don’t want to use breaks as an excuse to lapse back into procrastination.

Procrastinating is an ugly habit that many of us fall into.

Luckily, this bad habit can be overcome and if you are prone to procrastination you can become more proactive and productive.

Making Lifestyle Changes Easier

At least 90 out of 100 people would tell you that they do not enjoy change.

Change is not easy because humans are creatures of habit.

You want to continue living in a certain routine once you have conditioned your body and mind to function in that way.

This makes you feel comfortable with your surroundings and decisions.

Even if you don’t like change, there are ways to make healthy lifestyle changes easier.

There are also tools you can use to welcome change into your life, even when you’re entering new uncharted territory.

Here are 3 ways to make lifestyle changes easier for you:

1. Determine Pros and Cons.

If you know you need to make changes in your life and you aren’t looking forward to doing so, you can do a simple exercise that will make the change easier to handle.

Take a sheet of paper, and on one side write “Pros,” and on the other write, “Cons.”

On the corresponding side you will write the pros and the cons of the change so you can see what the benefits and drawbacks might be.

You may realize as you complete this exercise that the very thing holding you back is the fear of change itself.

Seeing the pros and cons will help you realize how it will benefit you to make the change.

This allows you to warm up to the thought that change actually might actually be a good idea!

2. Incorporate the Change Gradually.

Another way to make lifestyle changes easier is to work up to them.

For instance, if the healthy lifestyle changes that you need to make center around ceasing your habit of smoking and drinking you may not want to quit cold turkey; instead you can work up to it.

Stop drinking every night with dinner, and then stop drinking for a few days at a time.

You can do the same thing with smoking so that you aren’t fighting the lifestyle change.

Preparing yourself both physically and mentally helps you to ease the change into your daily routine.

3. Use Affirmations.

Another way to help make lifestyle changes easier is to use positive affirmations.

Positive affirmations are statements that encapsulate the way you would ideally think or behave.

You can either create your own affirmations or look for statements that others have created.

The key is that you find an affirmation that speaks to you.

Words are powerful and, when you repeat the same words over time, they continue to resonate through your mind.

When the words are positive you’ll find that you can tap into the positive thought anytime or anywhere.

If you’re worried about making a healthy lifestyle change, you don’t have to be. Instead, you can remind yourself why you want to change by saying something like, “Change is healthy.

I do not get stuck in the same routines.”

When you repeat this often enough, it becomes your response to the anxiety you feel.

This makes changes easier for you to handle.

Some lifestyle changes are harder than others to become accustomed to even when we desire to make the changes.

Many times just one of these tips will help you to implement the change, while other times you may need to use a variety of methods to feel at ease about the change.

One of the best ways to achieve your goals is to surround yourself with positive people.

The energy these people have never seems to let them down, and they are achieving the great goals in life that they desire and dream about.

Positive people can help you stay on track and energize you toward your own goals.

Many times these successful people share the same goals you have and are happy to pass on their wisdom and their techniques.

So how do you find these positive, like-minded people?

Here are 5 tips to help you find them, network with them, and glean valuable information and advice:

Although it may sound silly, smiling puts forth an image that instantly draws people towards you, especially other positive people.

Having and showcasing a good perspective of life’s ups and downs makes other people want to be around you.

Positivism is often a difficult frame of mind to sustain all the time, and therefore, people are always looking for a way to be more optimistic.

1. Staying positive is the building block of achieving your successes, as its opposite is futile.

Smile and you’ll attract other positive people!

2. Communicate Positively.

Although we all have rough days when nothing seems to be going right, the last thing you want do is complain and whine.

No one likes a complainer, right?

For example, if someone were to ask you in a friendly manner, “how are you today?” don’t shoot back that “life stinks” or that you’re just “alive” or something to that effect. Instead, take a moment – and a breath – and then reply with optimism, even if you’re having a tough day.

After all, positive people don’t waste their time or energy on complainers or negative people.

Even if you’re not feeling all that positive, by remaining optimistic in your outlook you’ll still attract positive people to you.

3. Think Positively.

Keeping a level head on your trek toward success is one key to obtaining your objectives.

Thinking positively – even through disappointment – will enable you to find the good in every situation and attract the positive people who share this vision.

Even if you don’t really subscribe to these positive thoughts at first, or you find positive thinking difficult, sooner or later making yourself think positively will create a pattern of positive thoughts in your brain.

We’ve all got energy within us and we have the choice to use it constructively or destructively.

If you want to attract positive people to network, then you’ll notice they try to be upbeat and optimistic, even during difficult times.

4. Act Positively.

It isn’t enough to smile, communicate, and think positively when pursuing your goal.

You must also put forth actions to substantiate this positivism.

For example, perhaps you thought you could get a promotion in the past, but then sat idly by while someone else snatched it up.

This time, transform those positive thoughts into action!

Showing your boss and employees that you are proactive and positive will set you up for more successes.

5. Reach Out.

Lastly, reach out to people at your work, in your circle of friends, or even to people on the street who seem to exemplify positivism.

Ask them what it is that makes them continue to be positive and reach their objectives.

Seeking out positive people will not only give you valuable information to help you reach your goals, but you will also become a successful person with your own network of positive friends and role models.

How to Show Love and Communicate With Loved Ones

It can be difficult to show people how much they mean to you.

Many of us go through life with strong feelings about the people in our lives but we never express those emotions clearly.

Yet, having meaningful relationships actually requires that we know how to show our love and affection.

Learning How to Communicate With Your Partner

Showing your emotions can be easier when you give yourself permission to start sharing how you feel with the people around you.

You can start small – laughing when you want to laugh, hugging someone when you want to hug, or holding hands when you want to be close to the other person.

It’s a good idea to start slow in order to build a strong foundation built on trust and respect.

Without building trust and respect, you can’t feel comfortable to share your love or deepest thoughts.

If you didn’t grow up in a family where these skills were encouraged, give yourself some time to get used to communicating and emoting.

If you have practiced this first step but still have a hard time showing love and communicating confidently, you may want to consider trying positive affirmations about communication and relationships.

Affirmations are statements you can use to change the way you think and behave.

Another way to look at it is that affirmations are positive statements that activate your mind to accomplish great things.

If you tell yourself each day, “Communicating my feelings is important,” for example, you give yourself permission to communicate how you feel about others.

I react well in the presence of chaos.

I am at peace because I allow my body to recharge.

When I give my body downtime I am able to recharge and become more centered.

Because I get the rest I need and make relaxation a priority in my life I am abundantly peaceful.

My tranquility surrounds my life and I am better able to handle all situations that come my way.

I am recharged when I take time to pursue my hobbies.

Even though I am an adult, my playtime is important to me.Taking the time to go on a bike ride down the river trail or going out with friends makes me feel refreshed.

I can release any stress that I may have because I can recharge myself.

My body requires rest and sleep to function at its highest potential.

That’s why I take care of myself by making sure I get my rest.

Resting my body allows my mind to be clear so I can embrace my peaceful state.

Tonight I will take my time in preparing for sleep instead of rushing through my routine. In this way, I can appreciate the process of preparing for rest.

I joyfully slip into my neatly made bed and breathe deeply several times to fully prepare my body for the rest I will receive.

As I drift off to sleep I can appreciate the stillness of the room and the stillness of my mind. When I awake, I feel renewed and my day starts off with peace.
