Tips to Make Group Collaborations Run Efficiently

Whether you’re the person in charge of the group or simply one of the key people that help make the wheel turn, you’re in a position that’s critical to making everything work smoothly in a team.

When it comes to teamwork, there are times when things can easily get out of control.

Dealing with other people can sometimes make you feel frustrated no matter what the setting.

There are things you can do to make working in a group more enjoyable.

Let’s discuss a few collaboration techniques to make the process a more level playing field for everyone involved.

Defining Every Member’s Role in the Group

There must be clear definitions of responsibility for every member of the group.

This is important no matter how big or small the group is.

Even if there are only two people involved, it will help alleviate problems such as duplicate work or missing pieces.

A group won’t function unless everyone involved knows what their job is and is allowed to carry it out.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Always clarify your exact responsibilities for the project.
Consider the other tasks being performed and how they relate to your specific duty.
Think about the skills necessary to complete the project and who is best suited to perform those steps.
Make sure everyone involved understands the project and all the steps needed to complete it.
Leave the floor open for questions and solutions should they arise throughout the project.

Dividing Up the Work

No one appreciates having all the work of their teammates dumped on them so consider how much time each step of the project takes and divide the work accordingly.

Always ask yourself:

How many hours do you think a specific task will take?
How will the added tasks fit into each person’s schedule?
What else are they responsible for?
Do they have too much on their plate?

If you’re a team leader, remember that people won’t necessarily do things exactly as you would have done it, and that’s okay!

Just because they do things differently doesn’t make their way wrong.

Resist the Urge to Micromanage Your Team

The people you’re overseeing were put on your team for a reason. If you’re dealing with people you trust, simply trust them to do their job.

While asking for an update is fine, constantly being after them about meeting their deadline is one way to drive them crazy or stage a revolt!

Micromanaging is extremely alienating to members of a team.

Unless you can make your team feel comfortable with their assigned jobs, you’ll end up with some really unhappy team members.

Settling Conflict

When you’re working on a team, conflict is something you’ll have to deal with at some point or another along the way.

In some ways, developing a teacher’s outlook is important.

For example, unless the members with the conflict are going to bring it to you in a formal manner, it’s often best not to get involved.

However, if you see active cruelty or malice going on, make sure you put a stop to it quickly.

While there’s nothing necessarily wrong with heated discussions, make sure the entire team understands that hostility or disrespect simply won’t be tolerated.

The above tips are four key areas that should be dealt with as soon as possible once the group is formed.

Working with a team can be very rewarding when the strengths of its members are used in harmony.

By now you must’ve heard of The Secret, a book by Rhonda Bryne that talks about the Law of Attraction and how to use The Secret in your life.

But have you read the book or seen the movie and tried to incorporate the tips into your life but failed? If so, it’s okay! You’re not alone.

That frustration stems from the fact that The Secret really only skims the surface on what you need to do in order to change your life.

To help you have the success you’re after, we’ve compiled a few tips to help you achieve your deepest desires!

How to Use The Secret In Your Daily Life

The basic premise of The Secret is that you attract the things you constantly think about.

To help make sure you stay on track with manifesting your desires, make a list.

You may think you know what you want, but those thoughts are often vague or not put in the right perspective.

Get specific. Instead of writing that you want to be out of debt, you need to visualize that you have all the money you could ever need and desire.

Think of your credit card statements with a zero balance. Think about what you will do with the money.

Make your list of wants very precise all the way down to the smallest detail.

Use visual reminders to help keep you focused. If you want a new car, then find a picture of the exact car you want.

You can even go to a dealership with a friend and take your dream car for a test drive and have your friend take your picture in the car.

Print the picture out and post it where you’ll see it each and everyday. You can do this with anything you want.

To attract more money, write yourself a check in the exact amount you want and post it everywhere you can see it.

The mind works well with visual reminders and clues.

Create a personal mantra or motto that you can use as a screensaver or wallpaper on your computer.

Record the message on your voicemail.

Write it out on small slips of paper and post those papers everywhere so every time you start to slip into negative thinking, you have a positive reminder to help you re-focus.

Reprogram Your Mind

To make sure you’re taking complete advantage of what The Secret teaches, you have to reprogram the way you think and this takes time.

Making sure you have gentle reminders that help reprogram your mind will be greatly beneficial.

It’s easy to slip into the old way of thinking, worrying about money, or stressing over negative things.

But you can disallow yourself to get into that negative spiral by staying focused on the positive.

Being Grateful For The Abundance Already In Your Life

You also need to be grateful for the things you have in your life right now. No, you may not have everything you want, but you have everything you need to succeed.

Be thankful for each day you wake up, for the fact that you’re able to breathe and move on your own.

Be thankful that you have a job, a roof over your head, and clothes on your back.

Be gracious because you have someone who loves you. The only way to get more of a good thing is to appreciate the good you have.

Create a gratitude book. Write in it whenever you have time and keep it handy so any time you feel down, you can take it out and remind yourself of all the good you have.

How to Make a Great First Impression

Face the facts: about 90% of the people you’re going to meet at work or in a social environment are going to have a preconceived notion of what type of person you are.

We as humans tend to stereotype and judge people based on what they’re wearing, who they’re around, or what they do for a living before we ever talk to them.

This isn’t fair and we all remember the adage, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but it’s a hard truth.

Attracting like-minded people into your world means being honest with yourself as well as with those you’re meeting for the first time.

If you’re scared of heights, don’t pretend that you’ve gone rock climbing. Just be honest!

After all, your deceit will surely be uncovered and any trust you’ve built up goes straight out the window.

Tips for a Great First Impression

To help make sure you’re always putting your best foot forward in any situation, here are a few tips to follow:

When you’re meeting someone new, act as if you’re simply meeting up with a good friend.

You’re more likely to be who you really are if you look at a new person as if they’re someone you’re already comfortable with.

There’s no advantage in trying to impress someone by being anyone other than yourself.

Avoid correcting people’s mistakes when in a casual conversation.

Helping a coworker avoid a big mistake on a project at work is admirable but don’t become the office know-it-all during your lunch hour.

Make sure that your body language is open and welcoming. Avoid crossing your legs or arms.

Stand with your body facing the person with whom you’re speaking. Make eye contact with them, but don’t stare at them.

Open body language makes you appear friendly and more people will want to talk to you.

Stand up straight. You don’t need to stand as if you have a wrought iron pole in your spine, but don’t slouch.

Good posture always provides a much better first impression than slouching over like you’re trying to hide from the world.

Keep a positive attitude and outlook.

Being pessimistic or the voice of doom and gloom will repel people away from you rather than attract them; however, you don’t want to be overly positive, which could give people the impression that you’re unrealistic or living in a fantasy world.

Focus on the people around you and not what’s going on in your head.

Be interested in what people are saying and doing around you to avoid appearing egotistical or self-centered.

If you know in advance that you’re going to meet a lot of new people, try to rehearse the event in your head.

In the movie Next with Nicolas Cage, the character could foresee quite a number of seconds into the future.

Before he went up to meet the woman of his dreams, he rehearsed every possible way he could think of to meet her and make the best impression.

While you don’t have such powers, you can still rehearse ahead of time!

The bottom line to making a good first impression is to relax and be yourself.

You may not be able to win over the world, but you’ll certainly be able to attract like-minded people.

Find More Time with These 9 Time Management Strategies

In this day and age, we all just seem to get busier and busier. How many times have you said to yourself, “I wish there were more hours in the day?”

Is there some magic formula that can help you get more done each day? No, of course not!

But there are specific things you can do that will help you become more organized and efficient.

In return, you’ll get more time to do the things you always wish you had time for.

Not everyone has the natural ability to get organized and, for some of us, it takes a serious amount of effort and a lot of trial and error to develop organizational skills.

If you’re one of those who weren’t born with the instinctive sense of organization and time management, here are some tips to help you find more time in your day.

If one doesn’t work, simply try another until you find the ones that fit best with your personality and lifestyle.

1. Plan & Schedule Your Day

This seems rather simple, but seeing everything on paper can help you feel in control.

Instead of letting an entire day get away from you and feeling like you’ve accomplished nothing, planning will put some order and structure into your day.

Use a family calendar or personal planner to organize your errands and appointments.

2. Write a Daily To-Do List

Put the most important tasks at the top of your list and get them done first, that way there’s no last minute rushing around.

The majority of your time and energy should be spent on accomplishing these important tasks.

Keep your lists a reasonable length so you’ll feel productive crossing off completed tasks.

3. Don’t Waste Time on Nonessential Tasks

As humans, our tendency is to do the easy jobs first, but these quick and simple jobs may not be as necessary as you once thought.

Before setting your mind to do something, ask yourself “Will this help me reach my ultimate goals or will it keep me from them?”

Cut down your time on unimportant tasks and use those minutes to do something fun for yourself.

4. Delegate Tasks

Delegation isn’t about “passing the buck,” it’s realizing that you can’t do everything by yourself. There is nothing wrong with asking for help when you need it.

Delegate chores to your family or hire professionals.

5. Break Large Tasks Down into Smaller Jobs

This will prevent you from getting overwhelmed. Just focus on each small job, one at a time, instead of trying to paint the whole canvas at once.

Need to reorganize your kitchen or basement? Start in one little corner and focus your attention there until it’s clean and organized.

6. Limit Distractions

I know this can be hard, but if at all possible turn off the phone and close your email program. Simply focus on the task at hand without constant interruptions.

Schedule your most important tasks at a time that offers the fewest disruptions.

7. Live a Healthy Lifestyle

This may seem out of place in this list, but studies show that people who eat right, exercise and get plenty of sleep have more energy to accomplish more during the day. The quality of your work will also improve when you feel healthy.

You don’t need to start a strict training regimen to regain your energy. You’ll see changes quickly by just making simple dietary changes and walking everyday.

8. Take Breaks

When you start to feel too stressed out, get up and take a little walk or do some stretches. When you’re stressed about something your energy isn’t being used on productive work. Instead you become scattered and un-focused.

A well-timed break can actually help you do more in a shorter amount of time.

9. Keep a diary of how you spend your time for several days.

By simply writing down how you spend the minutes in your day, you can re-evaluate the way you do things. Maybe there’s a way you can cut some minutes here and there to allow more flexibility in your schedule.

Effective time management is a key principle to a less stressful life.

Becoming a More Assertive Person

Many people confuse assertiveness with aggression.

There isn’t anything wrong or aggressive about open and honest communication when done appropriately.

You’re merely clarifying your needs to another person.

Assertiveness is being able to express your feelings while still respecting the feelings of others.

Benefits of Assertiveness

Assertiveness is an important skill that can greatly reduce the amount of conflict in your life if used appropriately.

Assertive people tend to see that their own needs are met in a timely fashion and therefore are healthier individuals with much less stress in their lives.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, passive people see themselves as victims and may become resentful and angry until one day they explode.

To help you avoid piling up resentments, I’ve compiled some techniques you can use to become a more assertive person.

Tips to Help You Become More Assertive

1. Stick with the facts.

When confronting someone about a problem, instead of exaggerating the situation by saying “You ALWAYS (or NEVER) ______” simply state the facts of the current situation.

For example, if a person is habitually late, instead of telling them they’re always late, mention what time they arrived and what time they had agreed to be there.

The discrepancy will speak for itself.

2. Begin with “I” instead of “You.”

When you start a confrontation with “you,” it seems like an attack and usually puts the other individual on the defensive.

Starting with the word “I” brings the focus to you – how their behavior has affected you and how you are feeling.

Rather than criticize the other person, show the people in your life how their actions affect you.

3. Maintain a confident posture. Letting others see your confidence helps you to assert yourself.

Stand up straight
Look people in the eye
Stay relaxed
Speak clearly
Respect the other individual’s personal space

Think of two people: one who is slouched over and afraid to look at your face and the other who is standing tall and commanding respect.

Which one would you respect?

4. Use a firm pleasant tone of voice.

Being assertive doesn’t mean raising your voice or getting emotional. Keep your responses short and direct.

There’s no need to make excuses or justify your response.

Yelling only instigates more anger and possibly even violence. Speak your mind calmly to keep everyone calm.

Don’t assume that you already know the other individual’s motives.

You may be surprised to find they aren’t the heinous person you thought they were!

Just as you can’t judge a book by its cover, you might not know all the details of what’s happening in the life or mind of the other person.

Listen and then ask questions. Instead of concentrating on how right you are, remember to listen to the other person’s point of view.

Try to understand where the other person is coming from and ask questions to clarify any concerns you might have.

You may need to compromise to find a solution that meets the needs of everyone involved.

The best solution is when both parties are satisfied with the outcome.

Every situation is different, so you’ll need to assess the circumstances to determine how much assertiveness is appropriate.

Acknowledge your successes.

Being assertive may not go well in every situation, but you can always learn from your mistakes and do something differently next time.

Acknowledging your success brings you the confidence to continue asserting yourself.

You may occasionally feel guilt about asserting yourself because it can feel selfish to speak up about your own needs.

Just remember that you, too, deserve to be treated with respect.

Only you can teach people how to treat you. Only you can do the best job of taking care of you.

All of us from time to time are faced with difficult situations.

Sometimes these problems may seem insurmountable.

However, there’s almost always a solution.

When you can’t figure out the solution to a problem, try to take a different approach to the situation to see your problem in an entirely different light.

Looking at the problem from a different perspective can often make the solution obvious instead of impossible.

This technique is one of many creative problem solving techniques that can help provide solutions to your trickiest problems.

Problem Solving Tips

Creative problem solving techniques are valuable skills to cultivate.

They can lead to the kind of innovative solutions that allow you to overcome obstacles and find the best possible solutions to even the stickiest of situations.

Some of the best solutions are the simplest ones and all it takes to find the solution is to gain a fresh perspective.

Try these creative problem solving techniques in your own life to solve your “impossible” problems:

Take a break. You can easily burn yourself out by over thinking a problem over a long period of time.

Take a little time away and return to it; it will do wonders for your perspective!

Take a nap, walk or just think about something else entirely for a short time before returning to the problem at hand.

Get an outside perspective.

Gather a few trusted friends or family members and explain the problem you’re trying to solve – having fresh input from people less familiar with the problem can be invaluable.

Brainstorm together and have everyone share their different solutions. Two heads are often better than one.

While this method can be very helpful, don’t rely on other people to always solve your problems.

It’s best to approach friends or coworkers after you’ve brainstormed a few solutions yourself.

Get it on paper. Write everything down about the situation.

Many of us are visually oriented thinkers and having charts or lists can help clarify the problem and its solution.

Organizing a seating arrangement for a wedding reception is a great example of how a chart can help solve problems.

Your time spent worrying about a problem will decrease significantly when you can physically make changes to your chart and see your solution.

Break a large problem into smaller parts. Very often what appears to be a large problem is really a series of smaller challenges.

Identify each challenge and work on solving each one separately.

For example, buying a house is one large task that consists of many smaller items.

When you break it down, you would focus on dealing with the realtor and getting mortgage approval first without worrying about movers or home inspections.

There’s more than one solution to every problem. Don’t limit yourself to just thinking of one solution.

Brainstorm as many solutions as possible, even if they sound crazy or outlandish, and then go back to evaluate which solutions might work.

In an office situation with multiple workers in a meeting, listen to each idea. Maybe two or more ideas can be developed into a viable and original solution.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of creative problem solving techniques and every technique may not work for every person or situation.

The important idea, however, is to get a fresh perspective so you can open up your mind to find the best solution.

Using this procedure regularly will enable you to view your problems in a new way and discover solutions more quickly.

Also, be patient and try not to get frustrated at the process.

Some problems are more difficult than others and will take more time to solve. But rest assured there is an answer!

When you want to achieve success, making one change at a time is a technique that brings results.

The type of food you eat has an impact on brain function and how you feel overall.

For example, the guys over at Google eat sushi for lunch and they’re always coming up with innovative ideas that make our lives easier!

Aside from sushi, what else can you eat to make you more capable of finding success?

The secret lies in raw foods – uncooked, natural foods.

Uncooked foods enable your body to better absorb all of the vitamins and minerals that the food has to offer.

Raw foods also contain enzymes that are very important for normal bodily function.

Without these enzymes, a person can be “off” mentally and physically.

You simply can’t function right if you’re not getting the proper nutrition.

In addition, it’s difficult coming up with innovative ideas for your success when your body and your brain are starving for essential nutrients.

Why make it harder on yourself?

The simple solution is to give your body what it needs.

Some of the most important types of raw food to eat are fruits and vegetables.

Your mind stays on the task at hand without deviating too much.
Your response time to certain situations is quicker than before.

2. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables have essential vitamins and minerals for your body and your brain.

3. Increase your Omega 3 fatty acids. Eat plenty of foods that are high in Omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids improve brain function.

In certain types of fish such as salmon, Mahi Mahi, and other varieties

Check your food labels: some foods have added Omega 3s to ensure that people are receiving an adequate supply in their diets.

Self-Motivation Strategies – How to Get Motivated, Quickly and Easily

Getting the motivation to do something – whether it’s a trip to the kitchen or to pursue your dream career – seems easy enough, but few can sustain the motivation to follow-through consistently.

There’s always too much to do.

The task is too big. Tomorrow’s a better day to get started.

Right?

There are a million reasons we don’t act, but almost always the consequences of our inaction are guilt and regret.

You’ll be glad to discover that you can stop that vicious cycle of inaction and regret and become the self-motivated person you always wanted to be!

Here are some excellent tips on how to motivate yourself, even when you’ve hit a setback, are in a slump, or haven’t even begun to figure out what you want from life:

Focus on just one goal at a time.

Even if you’re working toward improving several areas of your life, focus on each goal separately.

This helps to keep you from feeling overwhelmed and prevents you from giving up before you get started.

Flush out everything else from your mind, and keep your energies focused on the one goal.

Develop a tunnel vision focus to tune out unimportant tasks and distractions.

Envision results. Remembering why you’re inspired in the first place will refresh your motivation towards attaining your goal.

Think of how your life will be changed and improved once you achieve this goal.

Start small. Determine the tasks necessary to reach your goal. Now divide these tasks into a series of smaller tasks.

Continue this process until you’ve obtained tasks that you know you can accomplish. It’s like bite-size chunks.

When the chunks are small enough, you know you won’t be biting off more than you can chew at one time!

Attaining many small goals on your way to the big goal keeps you happy and motivated with constant successes.

Talk to friends, coworkers, and experts in the area you seek to master.

Get them to share tips, advice and experiences they’ve had that can help you to reach your goal.

Surrounding yourself with people who have the same goals – or have already attained them – will inspire you to act.

Tell people about your goals. By telling people about your goal, you are making a pact that you will follow-through.

Tell your friends, family and coworkers to energize your motivation.

Dedicate daily time. Dedicate a certain amount of time each day specifically to furthering this goal.

Investing time in attaining your goal every day will keep it in your mind as positive action.

Positive action propels success and diminishes doubts and regret.

Research industry or topic books, blogs and forums.

Anything you do to make yourself more knowledgeable about your goal can inspire you to act.

Reward yourself. When you accomplish a step or a positive outcome in your goal plan, reward yourself with a nice dinner or something that will make you feel special.

Learn from your mistakes. First, recognize that you will make mistakes and accept this. Second, take the opportunity to learn what to do (or not to do) the next time.

Analyzing how to fix the error will push you forward with greater confidence.

Replace negativity with positive thoughts and actions.

We all encounter those negative thoughts that tell us to give up, but knowing how to counteract them will keep you on track toward your goal.

Your mindset and attitude determine the positive or negative outcome of any situation.

Keep those positive thoughts and actions coming and success will surely follow.

Negativity is not reality unless you make it so.

Self-motivation begins with the end in mind, and the only person who can get you there is you!

The Art of Self-Reflection – 5 Exercises to Find Peace in Your Life

What is it you want to do with your life?

Even if you have an idea where you want to go, you may want to consider doing self-reflection exercises to ensure that you remain on the path toward success.

When you are on the right path, you can also find peace in your life.

Here are 5 self-reflection exercises that you can use to put things into perspective.

These exercises can help you to clear your mind, relax, and find that peace you crave:

1. Compose affirmations. Write a list of at least 50 affirmations.

These affirmations should embrace what you want to achieve and what you want to become in your life.

Write them in present tense and be sure to use the word “I” throughout the list. For example, “I am always good at my job.”

It is important to focus on the things that are occurring now that will lead to your future success.

You may hear words in your head such as, “But you messed this up the other day” or “You weren’t as productive a few days ago.”

If you are hearing things like this, then banish those negative thoughts. It can take some time to get used to positive thinking, but it’ll be time well-spent.

Repeating your affirmations aloud will enable you to reprogram your mind with positive thoughts.

2. Tap into your subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind is where your self-image is stored.

All of your attitudes, experiences, beliefs, and values are here. Your subconscious mind is the core of who you are and it’s a very powerful force.

If you go inward and reflect upon what’s inside this storehouse within the mind, you can gain a better sense of self-awareness.

Some may call this meditation. Regardless of what you call it, this process helps you to attain a higher level of consciousness.

Better self-awareness can provide you with many answers about yourself and your true beliefs.

3. Visualize creatively. This is a fun way to self-reflect!

Make yourself a box to show your hopes and dreams. Or you can create a vision board.

Place pictures and words that represent you and your thoughts into your box or on your board. The more details you include, the better it works!

Imagination is the key and the sky is the limit!

4. Ask yourself questions. Ask yourself questions about yourself. Write down your questions and your answers.

Ask yourself questions about the present and the future and provide yourself with positive answers.

You can be creative with your questions because only you know what’s inside of you.

Be sure to structure your questions to include details about your hopes and dreams.

5. Write and reflect. Purchase a journal and write in that journal every single day.

Each day, first write down something positive that occurred that day.

Next, write down a question for yourself.

Don’t answer that question then and there.

Reflect on that question and write your answer the next day as a part of your journal entry.

As you can see, self-reflection truly is an art.

It involves tapping your inner being and using that to figure out what it is you really want.

In time, your reflections will enable you to achieve the peace and serenity you deserve.

Simple Strategies to Attract Your Dream Job

If you don’t already have your dream job, what’s holding you back from the job you deserve?

You’ll soon discover that you can no longer make excuses because the time to attract your dream job is now!

It doesn’t really matter what your end goal is, there are always ways to get there.

The only real decision you need to make is what you want to go after.

After that, it’s all planning and implementing!

Use these simple strategies for attracting your dream job:

1. Learn by example.

Do you know of someone who is doing what you dream of?

Are there any role models, mentors, or coaches you can learn from?

Study what others have done and ask them questions if you have the opportunity.

Now that you already know what you want, you just need to figure out exactly how to get it!

2. Break it down.

While you’re keeping your eye on the prize, you might be taking too much in at once.

You also may be trying to accomplish too much too fast.

Break down your dream goal into smaller mini-goals.

Once you have a simplified plan in place, attack each mini-goal with your full attention and you’ll be chipping away slowly, but surely at your dream goal!

3. Get your foot in the door.

In the long run, it’s better for you to take the first step toward your dream job, rather than working a dead end job, even if the dead end job is paying you more.

If you can bear working for less money for a while, the long-term benefits will be worth it.

4. Work on communication.

If you work on your communication and people skills, you can work toward nearly any job that you want.

This is because you’ll get your points across clearly and become well respected.

5. Make yourself stand out.

It always helps if you’re seen as the type of person that will go the extra mile.

If there’s a specific job that you’re interviewing for, study the objectives and duties of the job carefully.

Make sure you have the qualities and skill set they’re looking for, and if you don’t, show that you’re willing to take the initiative to acquire them.

6. Take action.

There may be a number of things that are holding you back from truly going for your dream job.

Identify these causes and eliminate them.

What are you afraid of?

What is in the way of you and your dreams?

Your Dreams Take Time

It may take time for you to attract your dream job.

Chances are your dream job isn’t an entry-level position at your local McDonald’s, but perhaps you’ll want to own a restaurant someday.

In order to make this goal a reality, realize that your dreams take time, research, guidance, money, and a whole lot of effort.

After all, no restaurant opened overnight!

So what can you do today to get started on your goal?

Perhaps you can begin your research, locate a mentor, start a savings account, or do any number of other simple tasks that will help you build momentum.

Use these strategies whenever possible to help you attract your dream job. With consistent action and effort, the only way to go is up!
