Understanding the Auditory Relating Style

Different people have different styles of relating to others.

There are three identified styles of relating and auditory relating is one of these.

The other two are visual and kinesthetic.

The auditory relating style refers to those people who respond to and are stimulated by what they hear.

Auditory persons learn more effectively by hearing rather than by seeing.

Using audio, as well as reading aloud, is a great way to teach the auditory oriented person.

The auditory oriented person best responds to expressions of love in the form of words of affirmation and compliments.

The best gifts for an auditory person are:

Music
Audio books
Concerts
Anything that involves the use of their hearing sense

Auditory Relating in Relationships

The auditory person loves the sound of their voice! He can sit and chat for hours and he feels loved when this happens.

Auditory people are sensitive to another’s tone of voice and can be easily offended when given criticism or correction.

Therefore, using softer tones and beginning criticism or correction with positive affirmations is the best way to communicate with auditory people.

Auditory Relating and Conflict

An auditory person processes issues by talking things through; unless it’s something big, then they usually prefer quiet time.

In addition, the auditory person likes to have the last word and usually gets it.

Plus, they tend to be good at debating and getting others to talk as well.

Auditory persons are sensitive to the sounds of nature and often find peace when walking through the woods, by a crackling fire or strolling by a running river.

Add these types of activities to a great conversation and you’re speaking their love language.

The easiest way to identify an auditory oriented person is by listening to their expressions. They often use phrases like:

“Hear me out.”

“Listen to what I’m saying.”

“I didn’t hear that clearly.”

“We need to talk.”

“I can tell by your tone…”

Tips for Working with an Auditory Oriented Person

If your boss is an auditory oriented person, she’ll expect you to communicate through meetings, instead of email or memos.

She may even find email or memos to be offensive or less meaningful than a phone call or meeting.

In addition, if you need to address a problem or issue, you will want to begin the conversation with positive affirmations about what you like about a person or the project before you get into the issue.

An auditory person will then be more open to receiving your ideas and won’t be so quick to put up any walls.

Auditory oriented people tend to be more sensitive to breathing sounds, sighs and grunts, and often read into these noises as if something’s wrong.

If you’re a heavy sigh-er, for instance, you may often be asked, “What’s wrong?” every time you take a deep breath.

Once you communicate to the sensitive person that nothing’s wrong, eventually they’ll get used to your breathing sounds.

Communicating to an Auditory Type Person

Once you learn how to identify an auditory person, relating to them will be easier.

Here are the main points to remember once you’ve determined you’re dealing with a person who relates via sound:

Be sensitive when speaking.

Use appropriate tones of voice.

Begin criticism or correction with positive affirmations.

In addition, they like to hear compliments and the words “I love you” repeatedly. These are things the auditory person never tires of.

In fact, if you don’t compliment them or say “I love you” often enough, the auditory person may begin to feel unloved.

If you’re in a marriage with an auditory type person and they are constantly saying, “You don’t love me” or “You never say you love me,” you’re probably not speaking their love language.

To help with communication and make them feel loved, speak adorning words more frequently.

Communication is a lot easier when we know and understand our loved ones relating style, whether it is auditory, visual or kinesthetic.

Understanding the Kinesthetic Relating Style

There are three relating styles: kinesthetic, visual, and auditory.

Kinesthetic oriented people respond to touch and act on how they feel.

Kinesthetic people like to engage in affectionate rough housing, as well as being held for long periods of time.

Kinesthetic persons often use terms such as these in conversation:

“I just felt as if…”

“I’ll handle it.”

“I feel like we really connected.”

“Take it easy.”

Physical contact and feelings are their primary love language.

Kinesthetic people often feel overwhelmed or feel picked on in a verbal conflict.

When communicating with a kinesthetic oriented person, a soft touch on the arm means you care, you’re interested, and you’re listening.

Often the kinesthetic person will touch you as they are speaking as well.

In the work field, a handshake is often offered and expected by a kinesthetic person.

Not only is a handshake proper and a sign of respect to the kinesthetic person, but it is also a personal connection.

In addition, they may put their arm around your shoulders while walking and talking. This is how they communicate and connect.

Kinesthetic people are hard to motivate, however, because they often can’t get past how they’re feeling in the moment.

They are very emotionally driven and often let their emotions control their actions.

Kinesthetic oriented persons also react to gut instincts and tend not to base decisions on reason or logic.

Kinesthetic Relating in Love Relationships

In a relationship with a kinesthetic oriented person, if you don’t touch them often, they may not feel loved by you.

They may feel rejected and not even know why.

If your loved one is saying things like, “You never touch me,” or “You never cuddle with me anymore,” their love tank may be empty.

Fill it up with some meaningful and long snuggles on the couch, a big bear hug or a nice back massage.

Then keep their hearts filled by giving them the touching, hugging, and snuggling they are thirsting for.

Understanding the Three Different Relating Styles

It’s important in all relationships, including your spouse, children, siblings, friends or co-workers, to understand the different relating styles, as well as how to communicate effectively using them.

Visual

For the visually oriented person, using picture words is the best way to communicate.

The best gifts for the visually oriented person are tangible gifts, or one’s they can actually “see” such as:

Books

When speaking to the visually oriented person, look them directly in the eye and expect to be “examined” by them as well.

Be aware of your body language and facial expressions, as they’ll be determining if they trust what you’re saying based on those two elements.

Auditory

For the auditory oriented person, communicating in soft tones and positive affirmations says you care and are interested in them.

Verbal communication is very important to the auditory oriented person.

They process issues or problems by talking them out. If the auditory oriented person doesn’t hear the words “I love you” frequently enough, they may not feel loved.

How to Tell Which Type of Person You’re Dealing With

Knowing how to determine someone’s relating style is important and can usually be determined in the first few minutes after meeting for the first time.

If the person looks you directly in the eye or seems to “look you up and down,” they’re visual.

If they do most of the talking right away, they’re most likely an auditory type of person.

If they touch you on the arm or reach for a handshake immediately, they’re kinesthetic.

Just knowing these few characteristics will help you strengthen your current relationships and start off on the right foot when getting to know someone new.

Understanding the Visual Relating Style

The visual style is one of three types of relating styles.

The other two are auditory and kinesthetic.

Visual relating refers to those persons who are “visual” in their thinking.

Understanding how a visual person thinks and “sees” will help you communicate more effectively when interacting with others in relationships.

Visual oriented people often use expressions such as:

“I see.”

“It seems clear.”

“Do you see my point?

“I can see right through you.”

They also tend to be more uptight, high-strung, and very detail oriented.

The visual oriented person will often get lost in thoughts and daydreams.

Some examples of gifts and appreciated expressions of love for visually oriented people are:

Flowers
Games
Books
Framed Photos
Cards and Letters

When talking with a visually oriented person, using vivid words is the best way to communicate with them.

If you can draw a picture with your words, using lots of detail, you will be able to more closely identify with those who are more visually oriented.

Body Language

A visual person will also pay close attention to your body language.

They’ll notice your eye movements, hand gestures, posture and facial expressions and will read into those things to determine if they trust what you’re saying or not.

Words themselves probably won’t make much difference, but your body language and actions says it all to the visually oriented person.

Since visually oriented persons rely on their visual perception so much, they may tend to judge a book by its cover, so to speak.

The way one dresses or the car a person drives will say a lot to the visually oriented person.

Visual people may also be uneasy around people who build up a facade because they can’t see the real person inside or behind the mask.

Tips for Speaking to a Visual Type Person

1. When speaking to the visually oriented, look directly into their eyes and use positive body language.

Don’t cross your arms or appear distracted, as this will communicate to them that you’re focus isn’t on them or that you’re not really paying attention.

Another way to communicate positively is to nod your head, as if saying yes while they are speaking.

This shows that you’re actively listening and that you’re interested in what they’re saying.

On the other hand, when you’re having a conversation with a visually oriented person, you may feel as if you’re being examined because their eyes will move around, observing all the details of your hair, teeth, clothing and jewelry.

They may even stop you in conversation to give you a compliment about what you’re wearing or the way you’re hair is styled.

2. If your boss is visual-oriented, an organized office or workspace is probably very important to him or her.

Therefore, it’s important for you to keep your workspace neat and orderly to avoid conflict.

They may also be very picky about dress and expect their employees to dress professionally at all times.

Understanding Visually Oriented People

The visual person tends to like video games, computers, and television. Often they’re artistic, crafty, and creative thinkers.

They tend to be able to visualize the outcome of a decision and may tend to over analyze situations.

When building relationships, determining a person’s relating style is probably the first thing you should do so you can understand where they’re coming from and how they will respond.

Whether you’re aware of it or not, you gravitate toward the outcome of situations because of your thought processes.

Therefore, when you think positively, you’ll make decisions based on that type of outcome, consciously or unconsciously.

The same goes if you think negatively.

How to Use the Law of Attraction to Attract More Money

If you dwell on the negative – such as how bad the economy is or how tragic situations are – your thoughts, and therefore your decisions, take you down a path to negative outcomes.

What to Do When You’re Facing Sudden Job Loss

In today’s economy, the thought of losing your job is a real possibility.

Perhaps you’re already in that situation.

But don’t despair, there are things you can do and places you can go to help you through this tough time.

The first place you must go is to your unemployment agency.

You may even be able to apply for benefits online.

Either way, contacting them is the first step you need to take.

The unemployment agency provides financial benefits to those who qualify and they’ll help you find another job.

Many states are now offering programs that extend unemployment benefits so you can go back to school and learn a new trade or skill.

Be sure to ask your local agent about any special programs they’re currently offering.

Although they can make a significant difference in the short-term, unemployment benefits are usually much lower than your normal salary.

However, there are many other sources you can also take advantage of to help you get by during this rough financial time.

Let’s look at some of your options:

1. Reduce monthly expenses. Take a serious look at some of the things you can live without for a while until you get back on your feet.

Go through all of your bills and expenses and cut out the things that aren’t necessities.

Be honest with yourself – just because you think you can’t live without your cable or cell phone, doesn’t mean it’s true.

Some of the first places to look include:

Television
Phones – both cell and land line
Cell texting or other data communications

2. Save money by meal planning.

3. Waiting tables. One of the fastest ways to earn some quick cash is to wait tables.

This may not be glamorous, but it can bring in some immediate cash, and many restaurants beef up staff for the summer months.

4. Community agencies. If you’re in dire straits and need assistance right now, there are many local agencies you can turn to for aid.

The United Way and Salvation Army are located in most areas and offer a variety of programs that may be able to help you.

Your area may have different agencies, so check online or in the phone book for the ones in your community.

5. Government agencies.

Besides the unemployment agency, most areas have a Department of Human Resources, Social Services, or Health Department that can help or guide you to assistance.

6. Sell items on eBay. Take a good look around your home, shed, or garage.

How many boxes do you have lying around filled with stuff you never use?

You’ll be surprised at what people will pay for what you consider junk!

7. Have a yard sale. You can make a nice chunk of change by selling off furniture, clothing, and other household items you don’t use anymore.

8. Set up your own online or offline shop. If you can make arts and crafts, sell your items on eBay, Etsy or at local craft fairs.

With some communication, research, and creativity, you can take advantage of your time off to learn a new skill or start a new venture with skills and passions you already have.

How to Create Effective Goals

We all have things we want to accomplish in life and, for the most part, we do our best to achieve those goals.

Sometimes, however, we manage to set goals that aren’t effective or achievable and this can cause us a great deal of strife.

How do you know if your goals are effective and achievable?

The first thing to do is jot down the resources you’ll need to attain your goal, both physical resources and mental ones.

If there’s something you need to complete before you can make your goal a reality, prioritize the steps you must take to complete that task first.

Once your resources are in place, you’ve opened up the highway for achievement. Let’s see how to enter the on-ramp so you can be on your way!

Here are some strategies you can use to create effective goals you can achieve:

1. Make sure your goal is specific. Set a measurable goal so you can reach it and succeed.

Determine exact numbers and dates of whatever it is you want to accomplish.

Saying your goal is to be a faster runner or a better cook doesn’t work since there is no specific end target.

You won’t be able to judge if you’ve ever reached that goal because, no matter what, there’s always room to be better at something.

On the other hand, saying your goal is to “increase your running speed by shaving 10 seconds off the time it takes you to run your course” is specific and you can tell when you’ve reached it.

2. Your goal must also be attainable and realistic.

You wouldn’t set your goal to lose 30 pounds in the next 5 days, because it’s just not realistic.

Setting a goal to lose 30 pounds over the next 10-12 weeks is a real and attainable goal.

Unattainable goals are counterproductive.

Not only can you never complete an unattainable goal, but it can also prevent you from even trying.

By setting a goal you cannot possibly meet, you’re setting yourself up for failure.

3. Give yourself a time limit for your goal. Setting a deadline makes the goal a priority, keeps it in your mind, and makes it easier to achieve.

If you know you only have a specific time in which to achieve something, you tend to focus more time and energy on that task.

If you have a big goal, then divide it into smaller goals, or steps.

Smaller goals keep you focused on attaining the bigger goal as long as they’re related to each other.

For example, if your goal is to be promoted in six months, then establishing six one-month goals designed to improve your work performance will contribute to the overall goal.

4. Write down your goals. Most people have more than one goal at a time.

You can set goals in many different areas: family, work, health, education, hobbies, or any part of your life in which you’d like to make changes.

The question is how to handle all these goals at the same time.

Writing down each goal can help you organize them and better motivate you to work toward achieving them.

Once you have them written down, you may see ways they connect to each other and can devise ways to work on them at the same time.

For example, let’s say one goal you have is to get a job making more money and another is to continue your education.

Once you complete your education you should be able to land a better job.

See how one goal feeds another?

Perhaps one goal is to spend more time with your family and another one is to workout.

Well, if you exercised as a family once or twice a week, you’d accomplish both goals at the same time.

Using these goal-setting tips will make your goals more effective and achievable.

Once you’ve created your objectives, make a plan of action steps and stick with it.

In time, you’ll achieve these goals and you will have a system in place for any endeavor!

How to Boost Your Teen’s Self-Esteem

Teens are stuck in an in-between world.

They’re neither children nor adults.

They’re adjusting to both physical and mental changes, including emotional extremes caused by additional activity in the part of the brain that regulates emotions.

Needless to say, for many teens, this is a confusing time!

Along with the normal confusion, teens often suffer from low self-esteem and peer pressure.

Females are more prone to self-esteem issues and often get more attention for the problem, but males are just as susceptible.

In fact, any teen is vulnerable to self-esteem challenges.

As parents and involved adults, it’s our responsibility to help teens foster a healthy self-esteem.

It’s an ongoing process and there are no shortcuts.

Teens need to be constantly reminded that they’re great kids and we’re proud of them.

Follow these strategies every day to boost your teen’s self-esteem:

1. Take the time to talk with your teen.

While your teen may not want to talk to you, make sure they know you’re available if they change their mind.

Sometimes just knowing you’re there for them makes a difference.

Part of talking with a teen is actively listening.

Teens with self-esteem issues often feel that no one listens to them or cares about what they have to say.

Show them you’re listening by letting them finish and then asking questions about what they said.

2. Encourage your teen to live a healthy lifestyle.

Many times problems can manifest when teens are couch potatoes or have unhealthy eating habits.

When a teen eats a well balanced diet and gets a regular amount of exercise, it’s easier for them to feel better about themselves.

Schedule your teen for a full check-up with your doctor.

Your primary health care provider can rule out any physical causes for your teen’s low self-esteem.

They may also recommend additional steps or counseling that can help.

3. Encourage your teen to get involved in an activity they enjoy.

It could be any activity, club, or organization.

Getting them involved in something will help them realize they’re more normal than they think!

Encourage their individuality and interests by letting them pick the activity.

Give them the freedom to express themselves by getting involved in their own interests and passions.

4. Set a positive example for your teen.

No matter how distant your teen may seem, they still model your behaviors closely.

If they see you have a self-esteem issue, they may mimic that. Set an example with a positive attitude towards yourself and others.

5. Help your teen set goals and celebrate when they reach them.

Start with small goals that they can achieve in a short period of time.

When they reach the goal, celebrate with them.

If it takes longer to reach their goal, keep encouraging them.

Show them that taking definitive action to achieve their goal is just as important as reaching the goal.

Let your teen know that it’s okay to change their goal along the way.

This is the way of life and an important skill teens need to learn.

When circumstances change, we may need to re-adjust our plans.

If your teen understands this, it will help build their confidence.

6. Let your teen know you’re proud of them.

When they score an A, tell them how great they did. If they got a C, it’s just as important that your teen knows you’re proud of that grade as well.

Encourage them to do their best and be proud of them when they do.

A teen’s self-esteem can be fragile.

All the time you spend building your teen’s self-esteem can be torn down in one afternoon.

7. Teach your teen that learning to deal with disappointment, criticism, and challenges is an important life skill.

Talk to your teen about how important it is to know they’re still a great person worthy of love and affection, no matter what life may throw their way.

As with anyone, teens will have good and bad days.

Never be discouraged or give up on them.

Follow these strategies and soon enough, you’ll know that you’re on the right path.

Your teen will go through mood swings, but with time and love, they’ll emerge as a strong and confident adult.

Far too often, we allow our actions to be ruled by our emotions.

Living in the present and having a positive outlook about our future can help us reach goals we once thought were impossible.

Having a brighter outlook on life can open our eyes to more possibilities and encourage us to move in new and exciting directions.

How can you attain a better outlook on life?

It all has to do with the way you see yourself.

Having a positive and outgoing attitude is the key to changing your self-concept, boosting your income, and improving your life.

Here are some techniques you can use to boost your attitude:

1. Get control. Figure out the things that make you unhappy and find ways to change them for the better.

A positive outlook can change everything in your life – you just need to believe in yourself first.

Loving yourself is the only way you’re going to allow others to see you in a positive light as well.

If you project negativity, you’ll be viewed as a negative person.

Realizing you can’t control how others think and feel about you is critical to getting control of yourself.

You have the power to work on ways to make yourself happy.

Avoid doing something for the sole purpose of making someone else happy.

It must be about you. This isn’t about being selfish; it’s about being true to you.

2. Change the way you think. Negative thoughts beget negative actions.

Make a conscious effort to change the way you react and deal with situations.

Look for the silver lining instead of focusing on the negative attributes of situations and people.

If you think positively, you’ll act positively.

Those positive thoughts and actions will keep many anxieties at bay.

So many times in life, the things we do go unrecognized by others, whether it’s at home or work.

Private affirmations can make you feel better about yourself when others fail to verbalize their gratitude.

Boosting Your Self-Worth

What is self-worth, anyway?

To find out, answer this question: How much would you say you’re worth?

The answer is your self-worth, or the value you place on yourself.

Just like anything of value, the self can fluctuate up and down in worth for any number of reasons!

Even though you have your ups and downs, there are ways you can increase your self-worth each and every day.

We all have value, whether we believe it or not.

This value comes from our very existence, as well as our own set of skills, talents, ideas and strengths.

If we think of worth in terms of financial worth, we can get a good idea of how we can increase our own self-worth.

With money, the way to increase worth is to make more money.

We make more money by taking specific actions in our workplace or within our businesses.

Sounds obvious, right?

Well it is! Self-worth works the same way.

We increase our self-worth by focusing on the things that make up our worth.

Here are some things you can begin doing right now to increase your self-worth:

1. Enjoy a new hobby. Your skill set is a big determination of your self-worth.

The more you can do – and do well – the better you feel about yourself.

That’s why you’ll want to consider adding to your list of hobbies or recreational activities.

The more you enjoy what you do in your life, the more you’ll also enjoy who you are as a person.

2. Take a class. As with hobbies, learning something new is a great way to add to your self-worth.

It’s like a deposit into your knowledge bank.

There are plenty of options for this choice:

Take a class at a local community college.
Register for an online seminar.
Look in the local newspaper for free classes in your area.
Call your local school district. They offer inexpensive continuing education classes in almost every subject imaginable, including hobbies!

3. Read more. Reading is a wonderful way to stimulate the mind.

When you spark your imagination, new ideas emerge from the depths.

Nothing builds self-worth like learning more about the world you live in!

Maybe you’ve always wanted to be an inventor.

If so, you can generate some ideas by researching and reading information about your ideas.

4. Learn a language. There are a huge number of tools available that can assist you in mastering a new language.

Learning new languages builds self-worth because it allows you to communicate on a completely different level with others.

5. Do something out of the ordinary. Take a chance, conquer a challenge, and step out of your comfort zone.

These kinds of activities stretch you as an individual.

Doing something you never imagined gives you a glimpse of your true potential.

Anything that boosts your self-confidence will also increase your self-worth, since they’re directly related.

On the other hand, our self-worth becomes stagnant if we become arrogant and believe that we’ve accomplished all we can in life.

Start each day by making the commitment to your success.

After all, you are worthy of great things!

Even if you have a hard time believing this, take action anyway because where action is, emotions will follow.

Try something new, pick one of the topics from above, give it a shot and see for yourself how much of a difference it makes.

Just remember the great words of Henry Ford: “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”

Have you ever invested your time and emotions to build a relationship, only to see that relationship destroyed in a matter of minutes?

Relationships are important to everyone. As the saying goes, “No man is an island.”

We need and depend on each other.

Our relationships help define who we are and how we get along in the world.

We’re often judged by the company we keep and our relationships are part of this.

Without relationships, a business cannot exist for long.

Regardless of what type of business you have, you need good working relationships.

At the very least, you need people to do business with!

Forming healthy relationships with your customers and colleagues is an integral part of the recipe for success.

Additional types of relationships include family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, supervisors, mentors, and more.

Here are 5 essential keys to building healthy, profitable relationships:

1. Be Honest. People respond to honesty.

In a world where people are often faced with scams and lies, honesty is a priority.

The relationships you form with honesty as a foundation will be strong and powerful.

2. Apologize. If you’re wrong about anything or do something that offends or hurts someone, admit it.

Everyone makes mistakes; after all, we’re all human.

People respect you more if you admit your mistakes and apologize. Respect strengthens your relationships.

3. Stay in touch. Relationships require exchanges.

In our world today, we have many options to communicate and improve our relationships.

Face to face is always the best. Enjoy coffee, lunch, or just stop in for a chat.

Not only are you communicating, but you’re also fully devoting your time to them as well.

Letters and cards are a good way to stay in touch, and they remain special in this computer age full of quick text messages and impersonal emails.

Emails are also appreciated, particularly when you give it the personal touch, but nothing says, “you’re important to me” like meeting in-person or chatting on the phone.

4. Recognize accomplishments. Let people know that you notice even their small accomplishments.

Everyone likes to be noticed and recognized.

It fosters good feelings and builds on your relationship when you give someone a well-deserved compliment.

Let your co-worker know they did a great job on their presentation.

Tell your client you noticed how well they’re doing in their business.

Give your child a hug for doing a great job on anything!

5. Take a genuine interest in those you have relationships with.

Don’t just serve up generic compliments from time to time.

Ask questions.

Showing an interest and remembering small personal details lets them know that you’re thinking about them and that you’re interested in their life.

Learn from their experiences. For example, you can ask, “How did you do that?”

Ask about what they’ve been working on.

Inquire about their family, baseball team, or the new puppy.

Relationships add much to our lives.

In our personal life, they can add the richness of friends and shared memories.

In our business life, they can bring us success and recognition.

Strong, healthy relationships are the founding corners of a rewarding life.

Relationships grow over time.

While there are the rare finds where you instantly bond with someone, this is the exception rather than the rule.
